dense — The dense phrase is not truth in armor and the plain phrase is not truth stripped bare; each is a rendering, and the referent sits in neither. simple — The complicated version isn't more true. The simple version isn't more honest. Both are just versions — the real thing sits behind both of them.

dense — At the threshold where density gives way to clarity, translation is not the bridge laid between two fixed shores — that threshold is the only ground either shore ever had. simple — Right where dense turns into simple, that's not a bridge between two solid places. That crossing is the only place where translating actually happens.

dense — You are not tuning a filter across a claim that holds still beneath it; the hand that moves is the other half of what gets said. simple — You're not turning a dial on a sentence that stays the same underneath. Your hand, moving, is part of what the sentence means.
